Ernie looked at the cottage,
then back at the GPS and announced
“Destination reached-”

Best Served Cold dedication page: Hint 1

Mr. Hincks has underlined quite a few words on this page. If you read them in a certain order, you’ll find a message from him.

Best Served Cold dedication page: Hint 2

When you read the underlined words from top to bottom, left to right, this message is revealed (punctuation added for easier reading): “Hello, neighbor. My taped notes give extra details about the book, but it’s my puzzling markups written right on the page that will lead you to answers.”

Newspaper Delivery page: Hint 1

Mr. Hincks has written in a number of total points for each delivery site. Figuring out how he came up with those numbers is the first step in this puzzle.

Newspaper Delivery page: Hint 2

Each of the icons has been assigned a different amount of points. Compare the total number of points at each delivery site to the collection of icons at that site to figure out how many points each icon is worth.

Newspaper Delivery page: Hint 3

Delivery Site B is a good place to start. The total score there is 18 points, and there are 3 chair icons, therefore each chair icon must be worth 6 points.

Newspaper Delivery page: Hint 4

Now that you know that a chair icon is worth 6 points, you can look at Delivery Site D. There are 10 total points, but after you remove the 6 points for the chair, there are 4 remaining points for the 2 door icons. Therefore each door icon is worth 2 points.

Newspaper Delivery page: Hint 5

By using the icons and the totals together, you can determine that the icons are worth the following points:
Door = 2 points
Hand = 3 points
Backpack = 5 points
Chair = 6 points
Donut = 10 points

With a Little Help From My Readers page: Hint 1

Mr. Hincks has circled the word “WHATSOEVER” and left you a note telling you to move towards the icon. The icons on this page look very similar to the icons on the Newspaper Delivery page.

With a Little Help From My Readers page: Hint 2

You’ll need to figure out how many points each icon is worth before puzzling more on this page. If you don’t know how much each icon is worth, check the Newspaper Delivery page hints for help before continuing with these hints.

With a Little Help From My Readers page: Hint 3

Since the chair is worth six points, in the first line you’ll count six words from “WHATSOEVER” towards the chair icon. When you do that, you end up with the word “unused.”

With a Little Help From My Readers page: Hint 4

Collect one word from each line. Mr. Hincks circled the starting word in the first line. Find a word that shares the same properties as “WHATSOEVER” in the other lines in order to know where to start counting.

With a Little Help From My Readers page: Hint 5

The starting point for each line is the word in the line that is italicized and capitalized. For example, in the second line, start at “AND” and move left towards the hand icon. Since the hand icon is worth three points, you can collect the word “eyes.”

With a Little Help From My Readers page: Hint 6

From top to bottom, the words that you collect are UNUSED, EYES, SHIRT, HAIR, HAT, NOSE, EYEBROWS, GLASSES, EYELASHES, and MOUTH.

I Can Draw Supportive Workbook page: Hint 1

You’ve got a lot of options of how to draw here, but Mr. Hincks has left you a note suggesting that you might want to wait to work on this sheet until you discover the order that you should draw in.

I Can Draw Supportive Workbook page: Hint 2

The With a Little Help From My Readers page gave you an order that can be applied to this page.

I Can Draw Supportive Workbook page: Hint 3

The previous page gave you a list of features in order, but for each of those features, you need to find the one that wasn’t used to draw Ells or Ernie. For example, the first feature that you’re looking for is “eyes.” There are three different ways to draw eyes on this page, but only the “Iconic & Nerdy” eyes were not used in the portraits that Mr. Hincks drew at the top of the page.

I Can Draw Supportive Workbook page: Hint 4

In the order supplied by the previous page, the unused features are:
Eyes = Iconic & Nerdy
Shirt = Edgy & Indie
Hair = Gruff & Huffy
Hat = Teasing & Hyper
Nose = Unruly & Nosy
Eyebrows = Daring & Rugged
Glasses = Emotive & Deep
Eyelashes = Fun & Enthused
Mouth = Excited & Testy

I Can Draw Supportive Workbook page: Hint 5

Each of the two-word feature descriptions has letters that stick out from the others.

I Can Draw Supportive Workbook page: Hint 6

In the description of each feature, two of the letters are bolded. When you string those letters together the phrase IN EIGHT HUNDRED FEET is revealed, which is the end of Ernie’s statement in Part 1, and the answer that Mr. Hincks is looking for! Enter it in the box above to let him know that he can continue telling you about the book.
